6061 aluminum has a tensile strength around 310 MPa (T6), with good machinability and weldability. 6063 aluminum has a tensile strength around 241 MPa (T6), with excellent extrudability and the best anodizing finish of the 6xxx series.

When to Choose 6061 Aluminum

Choose 6061 when strength and mechanical performance matter more than surface appearance. It is the right choice for CNC-machined structural parts, load-bearing components, automotive and aerospace parts, and parts requiring welding. If your part will be cut, drilled, tapped, or subjected to mechanical load, 6061-T6 is usually the safe choice.

When to Choose 6063 Aluminum

Choose 6063 when you need complex profiles, thin walls, or a premium cosmetic finish. It is ideal for architectural profiles, extruded heat sinks, LED lighting channels and enclosures, and decorative trims. 6063 flows into intricate cross-sections more easily, which lowers tooling wear and makes thin-walled shapes practical.

Surface Finish: Why It Matters

If your product needs anodizing, 6063 generally produces a smoother, more uniform finish with fewer surface defects. 6061 can also be anodized, but its higher copper content can leave a slightly less consistent color. For powder coating, both alloys perform well.

6063 is generally slightly less expensive and easier to extrude, which can reduce tooling cost on complex profiles. 6061 costs a little more and machines more reliably, which often saves money on CNC operations because tools last longer and scrap rates drop.
