German and wider EU lighting brands hold custom heat sink suppliers to strict thermal, finish and documentation standards. Here is what a project for the German market typically requires, and how SYHARVEST extrudes, machines and finishes it.

LED lighting has moved from a novelty to the default source in offices, retail, industry and outdoor applications. As watt densities rise and fixtures get smaller, the aluminum heat sink stops being a simple bracket and becomes the component that decides how bright a fixture can run, how long it lasts and how well it keeps its color. That shift is exactly why German and wider European lighting brands now specify heat sinks much more tightly than they did a few years ago.

Why Thermal Management Decides LED Fixture Performance

An LED converts only part of its input power into light. The rest becomes heat, and that heat has to leave the package. If it does not, the junction temperature climbs, and three things happen at once: light output drops, the color point shifts, and the useful lifetime falls sharply. A fixture that is rated for 50,000 hours at 25 °C junction temperature can lose a large share of that life at 80 °C. Good thermal design is therefore not a detail — it is the difference between a fixture that performs on paper and one that performs in a real installation.

The heat sink is the main path for that heat. Its job is to spread heat away from the LED board quickly and then hand it to the air. Everything else — wall thickness, fin geometry, the flatness of the mounting face, the finish — exists to support those two steps.

What Lighting Brands in Germany Typically Specify

Specifications vary from project to project, but the pattern below reflects what EU lighting brands commonly ask for on a custom heat sink:

Requirement Typical expectation
Thermal resistance 0.5–2.0 °C/W, depending on wattage and whether cooling is passive or forced
Alloy 6063 for thin-wall and complex fin profiles; 6061 where higher mechanical strength is needed
Surface finish Black anodizing (10–25 µm) or matte powder coating, with UV and salt-spray resistance
Extrusion tolerance Per EN 755-9 for the profile; ±0.05 mm on machined mounting faces
Flatness Tight control on the LED mounting face so the board sits in full contact
Length Cut to length from 10 mm to 3000 mm, with a controlled cut tolerance
Documentation Material certificates per batch, plus RoHS and REACH declarations for the delivered part

Two points are worth stressing. First, flatness matters more than most drawings suggest: an LED board only transfers heat where it actually touches the metal, so a bowed mounting face can undo an otherwise good design. Second, documentation is not optional in this market. Purchasing teams in Germany routinely ask for material certificates and compliance declarations before the first shipment, and a supplier who cannot provide them creates work for the buyer.

Extrusion: Matching the Press to the Profile

A heat sink with thin fins, a wide base and a large circumscribed circle is not something every press can produce. SYHARVEST runs eight extrusion presses — three 660T, two 1100T, one 1800T, one 2500T and one 3600T/4000T — covering billet diameters from about 90 mm to 254 mm and profiles up to roughly 320 mm in circumscribed circle. That range lets us put a wide LED linear heat sink on the larger presses, where the metal flow is more even and the finish is cleaner, while smaller fixtures and housings run on the 660T and 1100T machines.

We standardize on aluminum alloys 6063, 6061 and 6005, which between them cover the thermal, strength and anodizing needs of most lighting projects. Alloy choice is settled early, because it affects both the extrusion speed and the final finish.

Machining and Surface Finish in One Chain

Many heat sink projects need more than a cut extrusion. Fixing holes, tapped mounting points, milled flat faces and cut-outs for drivers or cable entries all come from our machining department, which runs eight CNC machines. Keeping extrusion, machining and surface treatment inside one chain has a practical benefit for the buyer: the part arrives ready to assemble, and there is no argument between three suppliers about which operation caused a dimensional problem.

For finish, we operate a horizontal anodizing line and a vertical powder coating line, with electrophoresis available as an option. Black anodizing remains the most common choice for heat sinks because it adds corrosion resistance and improves radiant heat transfer, while powder coating is preferred where the sink is visible and color matching matters.

Inspection and Documentation

Every batch is dimensionally checked against the drawing, and machined parts are verified on the faces that matter for assembly. Where a customer requests it, we can provide a first article inspection report on the initial samples so that the thermal interface, hole positions and finish are signed off before mass production starts. Material certificates and compliance documents travel with the shipment rather than following it later.

Lead Times

Lead time depends on how much work a part needs. Plain extruded blanks run at roughly 5–7 days; parts that also need surface treatment around 12 days; and parts that go through extrusion, machining and finishing 15–18 days. For projects heading to Germany, sea freight to European ports is the cost-effective route for production volumes, while air freight is normally used for samples and approval batches.

What to Send Us for a Quote

To quote a custom LED heat sink accurately, we need:

  • A drawing (PDF, DXF or STEP) with tolerances and the critical faces marked
  • The alloy, if it is already fixed, or the thermal and mechanical requirement if it is not
  • The surface finish and any color reference
  • The target thermal resistance or the LED wattage and drive current
  • Estimated annual quantity and the first order quantity
  • Packaging and labeling requirements for the German market

If you are still at the design stage, send the sketch and the thermal target anyway. Our engineers will review manufacturability, suggest wall thicknesses and fin spacing that extrude cleanly, and come back with a practical design and a price. Send your drawing or inquiry to info@syharvest.com and we will respond within 24 hours on working days.
